 The Merging Risk (February/March 2010).  This article (first published in FD Legal Volume 4 Issue 3) examines merger and risk in the current climate.  Merger is always attended by risk and we can all point to examples of hasty or ill-considered mergers that have ended in tears.  For many firms,  however, the risk of doing nothing can exceed the risk of decisive, bold and brave action.  Click the link to read or download Mergers and Risk.

Market Positioning - A Diagnostic Planning Guide for Law Firm Development (July 2009). Firm of Purpose (July 2009). Knowing the Performaholics in Your Firm  (June 2009 White Paper).  An important feature of law firm leadership is to try to understand what it is that inspires, interests and motivates your people.  Nick has found by experience that not all partners are driven by the same motivating factors and has found it useful to place partners into one of four categories to assess their leaning towards an achievement orientation and an altruism orientation.  The four types are Performaholics, Life Stylists, Idealists and Institution Builders.  Click here to read or download the White Paper

Leadership for the Long Haul (2008).  The first 100 days for a managing partner or chief executive may be challenging but life can get even harder during ensuing periods in office.  Leaders are often elected or appointed with a mandate to deal with short term issues and after their intial honeymoon period, they then need to develop leadership skills to take the firm further and to deal with long term issues.  This article helps leaders to focus on leadereship skills for the long haul and to convert from well paid adminstrators into true leaders.  Click here to read or download Leadership for the Long Haul
